this is my first mac and excel doesn't seem to work right. i keep
getting a "cannot shift objects off sheet" when I try to narrow clumn
width even slightly. second problem, it randomly takes me to the top
or bottom cell in a column when I click on a cell. any advice?

This is by design - a double click on an active cell's border is the
equivalent of typing End then pressing the corresponding arrow key.

Double click in the center of the cell.
