Excel2007 limiting Pre-2007 Worksheet protection passwords to 15 c

Hi,
I'm having an issue using Excel 2007's “password re-entry†dialog box.
When I re-enter a desired password for worksheet content protection of a
worksheet in a Pre-2007 workbook, the dialog box's password re-entry field
only allows me to enter up to 15 characters, while Excel 2007's “initial
password entry†dialog box, that's displayed before the “password re-entryâ€
dialog box, allows me to enter more than 15 characters.
To the best of my knowledge, this issue did not occur in Pre-2007 versions
of Excel.
Can anyone replicate this?

Hi greg,

Just tried with 24 charachters - did not have a problem.

Can you go to Excel Options -> Resources -> About Microsoft Excel and let us
know what version you are running? (mine is 12.0 with SP1)

BTW, you are aware that Excel passwords are not secure? It is easy to
download password crackers that will quickly disable Excel protection. A
long password for sheet protection will not make a lot of difference.

Thanks for the quick response Ed.
My Excel2007 about info shows SP1 has been installed, the update option said
my version was up-to-date, and the diagnose & repair did not find any issues.
Thanks for the reminder about the password crackers. At some point, I would
like to learn what types of excel passwords are vulnerable to them (e.g.
worksheet, workbook, VBA project, etc.). At this point, I'm primarily using
passwords to deter accidental alterations.

Could you try replicating this issue again with a file that has been saved
as an .xls file (97-2003 file) and it and the excel app has been closed at
least once beforehand?
