excel97 subtract two dates to find number of days

I have tried solving this problem by referring to EVERY thread on this
subject and NOTHING works. I use excel 97 and the 'analysis tool pac'
is active in the add-ons. Simply subtracting A1 - B1 only works if the
different dates are within the same month and year. If the different
dates are from 2 different months, the result is a huge figure. I
tried the function, DateDif(A1,B1,"d") (or "md")and the result is NUM!
Reversing the dates result in the same NUM!
I'm getting crazy with this - someone out there please help.
