Excell 2008 will not upate links when copiedand pasted from the Web

Excel 2008 for Mac. There seems to a SIGNIFICANT bug.
When I paste data from a web page into a worksheet and cells on that worksheet are linked to another, the cells on the other worksheet DO NOT get updated. This behavior is seen if the cells are linked (via a Paste Link) or if they are directly set equal to the cells by a formula. I tried both Firefox and Safari.

I can "work around" this bug by first pasting the web data into a worksheet and then copy and paste that data to the correct location.

This works perfectly well in Excel X - on the very same file. This is a much better work around.

Are you sure Calculation is set to automatic?

Yes, One of the first things I looked at. And I gave it a manual Calculate command as well.

It seems like it has something to do with the fact that the data is from the web - I can paste from Quicken or just type in new values and the cells in the other sheet get updated to reflect the new values.

Well, I don¹t see this. I pasted stuff from a web page and a cell
referencing it gets updated just fine.

I have reproduced this using some public data. Create a file where sheet2 is just a link from sheet1. Then:

Go to:
 <http://screen.morningstar.com/FundSelector.html>
go to the bottom of the page and click “show results”
do a “select all” followed by a “copy”
go to sheet1 and do a “paste”
note values in sheet2
go back to browser, click “next 25”
do a “select all” followed by a “copy”
Note the data in sheet2, is the current data on sheet1?

work for you?
Thanks for looking into this

It seems to be related to "select all"
If I copy just a piece of the page, the cells get updated, just fine. Again, the select all works with Excel

Go to:

go to the bottom of the page and click ³show results²

note values in sheet2
go back to browser, click ³next 25²
do a ³select all² followed by a ³copy²
Note the data in sheet2, is the current data on sheet1?

Yes, it works fine for me. Did you intentionally leave out the Paste after
copying the last 25? No matter what I tried, the proper data appeared in sheet
1 and was properly linked to sheet 2.

And... Did you really mean select all after show results? This copies the
entire web page. Don¹t you really want to just copy the table contents?

Yes, I have been doing "select all" for years. It's hard to select just the data you want (cursor interaction is not robust) but more importantly I might want multiple sites of data on the page that are not contiguous. So I just grab the whole page (which is robust), paste into the top of a worksheet, and then "map" to "real" worksheets via links to the data I need.

Are you seeing the same thing?

(note in my instructions above, I just saw that I did not instruct you to do the paste of the second set of data on sheet1.)

Sorry, you can reproduce this, but the problem still persists. I have tried many ways to find some insight. You can work around by copying the data into a worksheet, then copying and pasting the data in-place.

Since this is sketchy, I might just go back to X.
