I got this error:
An exception occurred while trying to run c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll,
control_runDLL "c:\program files\common files\microsoft
shared\speech\sapi.cpl", Speech.

I get no output on screen from speech input in word 2003. The microphone
works. It won't let me change the profile (let me delete but won't let me
train a new one). It fails to initialize the voice training wizard when I go
to the control panel: speech properties. It says a speech engine is currently
in use.

Could someone explain a way around this? Thanks.

Sapi.cpl is the Windows Control Panel interface for the Speech applet.

You may want to post this in the Microsoft Speech newsgroup (link below) as well and let them know what steps you were using when
this occured and if you had been previously using speech/dictation successfully.

It may be as simple as restarting the PC or it could be a conflict with another, 3rd party, dictation implementation or a newer
Speech engine. The hotfix in this article was ink if I recall, Windows XP Service Pack 2, but you may want to try the workaround
steps to see if it helps:

Thank you for your reply. I read & followed the Microsoft directions you
pointed me to. There were two files in the subdirectory that I deleted, as
instructed. When I started Word again & turned on speech, the function still
did not work.

I looked in the subdirectory ( documents & settings\<owner name>\application
data\microsoft\speech\files\UserLexicons) and found a 940 byte-long file
named: SP_BEF56C10EADE4BE8B4C226797819D4BB.dat. This is apparently what Word
created for default use in the speech function.

Is there another thing to do? MS mentions a hotfix but does not supply one,
unless this was supposed to be it.

As mentioned previously posting in the Speech newsgroup (see link at bottom of prior message) may be helfpul as they may recognize
that particular error as a speech tech related one.

Some hotfixes are available only by phoning Microsoft (the hotfixes are free) and some are pulled back once a particular fix has
been incorporated into a Windows Service Pack. The 'workaround', which is what the article has in it sometimes work, but they may
also change things just enough that you get a different error message.

You may want to also restart the PC after trying the workaround prior to retesting and checking to see if the dicatation/speech
recognition gives you the same error in Outlook Express or Internet Explorer.

Speech profiles can get fairly large once you've 'trained' to match your speaking patterns for U.S. English.

Thank you for your help. I am reposting on the speech_tech board you suggest.
I did reboot & it did not solve the problem or change the error output.
