Excessive file size in Word X

Why is the file size of a simple word document so large when the "fast
save" option is on?

A 3 page document was saved with file size of 1.5M with the "fast
save" option on but only 40K when this is turned off!!

The fast save option works as a bio-waste digester. It bloats and
bloats your file, turning every keystroke into methane and various
gaseous sulphides, until, with one giant wall-shaking raspberry, it
destroys all your work.

It is broken. Turn it off and leave it off.
Seriously.

Use autosave every n minutes if you must.

Yes, thanks for the clearest explanation of why we shouldn't use fast saves
I've yet seen. Very nicely done!

It seems to me we've seen a lot of explanations of this, over quite a long
period of time. Too long.

Care to venture a guess as to why this option still exists? It isn't like
removing an option in a preference dialog is terribly difficult and they
don't have to actually remove the fast save code, just disable it.

Thanks,

Henry

Nope - That suggestion has been made many times without any official
response. Worth suggesting again via Help/Feedback...

(Back after a 10-day absence)

Yep, did that just now. Anyone else want to add their voice?

By the way, during my absence, I received my first communication ever --I've
used MS products since about 1982-- from a Microsoft employee regarding a
technical issue I raised on the Entourage Mac mailing list. So someone _is_
listening, at least in that forum.

Thanks,

Henry

Hey Henry,

Just to let you know, we are aware of these issues and looking at them for a
future release.

Thanks for the postings!

I don't have to guess: I was told by the man who does the code :)

It's still there because a) It's expensive to take it out, and b) It is
required if ever someone sends you a document that was saved with it turned
on, and c) It's the core engine that provides multiple-level Undo, which is
a very keenly-welcomed feature of Word.

Yeah, I know, you could disable it on Save for new documents, but see "a"
above.

Hope this helps
