I don't have to guess: I was told by the man who does the code
It's still there because a) It's expensive to take it out, and b) It is
required if ever someone sends you a document that was saved with it turned
on, and c) It's the core engine that provides multiple-level Undo, which is
a very keenly-welcomed feature of Word.
Yeah, I know, you could disable it on Save for new documents, but see "a"
above.

It seems to me we've seen a lot of explanations of this, over quite a long
period of time. Too long.
Care to venture a guess as to why this option still exists? It isn't like
removing an option in a preference dialog is terribly difficult and they
don't have to actually remove the fast save code, just disable it.
