Excessive Incoming E-mails

I'm running Outlook 2003. When I click on Send/Receive to download new
messages, the Send/Receive Status says receiving 1 of 780. I know I don't
have 780 new e-mail messages. Because of the high number, I cancelled, but
am concerned I might have been hit by a virus. Any suggestions?

HOW do you know there aren't 780 e-mails waiting in your mailbox?

How many e-mails are sitting in the server-side Inbox when you use the
webmail interface to your e-mail account?

Do you have antivirus integrated with Outlook's send/receive? If yes,
disable it/uninstall it.

Also, is Office/Outlook fully patched? What happens if you let it complete
the send/receive?
