Exchange 2003 "Mail could not be received at this time." error

J

John Hall

I've had this problem intermittently, and have never been able to isolate
what causes it.

I'm running Entourage 11.3.6 on an Intel MacBook Pro running 10.4.10.

From time to time, when I launch Entourage and it tries to sync with
Exchange, I get this error:

Mail could not be received at this time. The server for account "<my
account>" returned the error "Login failure: unknown user name or bad
password." Your username/password or security settings may be incorrect.
Would you like to try re-entering your password?

This message shows up despite the fact that my password hasn't changed, and
may have been working fine for weeks. I know that my password works, because
I can use either Outlook Web Access or, crazily, Apple Mail to reach
Exchange just fine.

In the past, I've screwed around with a few things like deleting Exchange's
entry in the Keychain, purging all the junk, drafts and deleted mail, and
trying to use the OWA address instead of the Exchange server itself in the
account settings. Nothing has ever worked, but usually, in a few hours or
sometimes days, most often when I'm forced into not trying by getting on an
airplane, it resolves itself by the time I get home and try again from a
different network.

I spent almost all of today going through the search engines trying to
resolve this. No one really seems to know what's going on.

Can anyone on this group point me to decent info about it?

Thanks.

Hi John!

This may or may not be a problem with Entourage. Have a look at this
older blog entry of mine. If you don't administer your Exchange Server
then you may need to pass along this information to your server's admin.

Hope this helps!
