exchange account keeps resetting itself as default

I am trying to deal with an Exchange account on a notebook computer
attached to a Small Business Server 2003 domain that keeps resetting
itself to the default e-mail account in Outlook after reboot, even
when the other account on the machine (an SMTP/POP account) has been
set as default before closing the program. I don't think Exchange is
even being used on the network, but I am not sure. Does anyone have
any clues as to why this account might keep setting itself back as the
default e-mail account in Outlook? Thanks for any replies.

There is a 32K limit on server-side rules in Exchange. See this article for

I believe that when you have both Exchange and POP in the same profile,
Outlook will insist that the Exchange account be the default. If you don't
use Exchange on that notebook, why not remove the account from the profile?

My installation of OL 2003 doesn't do that. I have one profile with 2
POP/SMTP accounts and one Exchange account. One of the POP/SMTP
accounts is the default, and OL never tries to change that. Perhaps,
though, in my case, it helps that the Exchange server doesn't exist.

If you don't
use Exchange on that notebook, why not remove the account from the profile?

Maybe he had the same problem I did (0x800408FC), and adding an
Exchange account "fixed" it

Many thanks for this reference to the slipstick.com solution, but I am
confused. I do not want to mess with the registry or set Exchange as
the SMTP server. If I prevent the whole PRF file from executing,
won't this also prevent other needed settings from being put in
place? Is there some way to keep the PRF file and just edit it to
prevent the default account in Outlook from being changed?

Also, the person whose computer this is happening on said that the
last time someone deleted the Exchange account from his machine, he
also lost all his e-mail and his entire address book. This does not
sound right to me. If I just delete the Exchange account, is there
some chance that this other data will also disappear?
