exchange client cannot connect

i've installed outlook 2003 on a notebook and connected
it on the lan. the connection is fine because i can ping
the exchange server and go onto the internet. when i try
to create an exchange client, i put the internal ip
address of the exchange server as the setting, type in my
username and click "check name". but a message comes up
saying "the name could not be resolved. the connection to
the microsoft exchange server is unavailable. outlook
must be online or connected to complete the action". i've
done exchange client installation this same way on other
workstations and it always worked fine. your advice?

Hi Clifford

I don't know if this is the answer to your problem but I had a similar experience with my first Outlook 2003 installation. I found that the address of the exchange server is a little different to previous versions where you could get away with just typing in the exchange server name. It now has to be in the format fileservername.domainname so for example if your file server is called abcserver and your domain name is abccompany.com, then you need to type: abcserver.abccompany.com in the exchange server name box.

Hope this help

Nic

Fighting this issue with Win2000 OS/S, Outlook2003 against a Exchang
5.5/ NT domain. Have an internal DNS server which points to th
Exchange server and resolves.. Can open OWA etc without problem.
Whenever i try to set up the exchange account and try to verify name.
bingo.. no connection / name cannot be resolved..

Anybody have any ideas?
