Exchange email lost connection after internet went down

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: Exchange

The loss of the internet connection was a service interruption. On recovery, the POP account works fine, but the exchange account stays 'not connected'. The 'work offline' is not clicked, internet connection is fine for Firefox, Entourage POP accounts etc.
Rebooted twice - shut down and removed battery once, no difference - any ideas?
