Exchange of ressources names!!!!

bxandi

Hi,
i´ve to change in huge project plan the names of all ressources. But
every time when i only exchange the names (working time an calender
are the same), the duration, begin, end and so on changes - what i
really dont need.
Is there any other possibility to exchange only the names an leace the
project plan as it is (search&exchange do work, but the timeplan is
afterwards not the same as before)
kind regards

bxandi,
I assume you are NOT using Project Server. If you are, and are having
trouble with the exchange resource wizard, I suggest you post to our
sister newsgroup, microsoft.public.project.server.

How many resources do you have? Are they in a resource pool file? Where
will the new resource names come from (i.e. are they in another project
file or on an Excel spreadsheet)?

Depending on the answers to the above, it could be a very simple VBA
macro to make the exchange without impacting any of the schedule
parameters you mention.

Could this be as simple as going to the resource sheet and renaming "Kevin"
to "Mary"? This would replace the name at every occurence and keep
everything else identical .... labor rate, max units, assigned calendar .....
everything. I used the word "everything" multiple times because it really
does mean everything.... it is intended as a caution, not a sanction. For
example, if you are using a resource pool, this action would impact every
file associated with the pool ....

Post back after considering John's questions.

You are correct, i have no project server. I´ve would have on i would
have posted in the sister group.

No the resource names are are in the same file as the plan

Perfect, could you please give an example?

bxandi,
You didn't answer all the questions (I ask them for a reason). How many
resources do you have? If it is only a few you might just be better off
manually re-entering the names. If it is more than a few, where will
the new resource name information come from?

Without an answer to the last question, I couldn't begin to give a VBA
example.

Hi John,
about 140 resources. I´ve exchanged mostly of them with re-entering
the names. BUT if i have two resources on one task, this isnt working.
Do you have any idea for me?
kind regards

How are you replacing your resources? I would use the replace resource
feature on the resource allocation dialog box.

If you have a fixed work task and take a resource off, then Project will
extend the work as it appears that the remaining resources have to work
longer to complete the 'fixed work'. That said, when you add the new
resource, the time should be pulled in again.

bxandi,
Something just isn't adding up. I've asked you two times where the new
resource names are coming from and I have yet to hear the answer. If I
had that information your problem would likely have been solved by now.

Meanwhile, it sounds like you are trying to re-enter the names directly
in the Gantt Chart view using the Resource Names field. If all you want
to do is to replace one name with another, you need to do that on the
Resource Sheet view. It is a bit tedious typing in those names but it is
straightforward and will not cause any problems with the schedule.
