exchange server unavailable problem

I have installed outlook std 2003 on a client and am
trying to connect to user's email account but am
getting "server unavailable" or cannot connect to server
errors. I am trying to create account from settings-
controlpanel-mail-new email account-select exchange server-
enter servername and username-click on Check Name but get
error "unable to connect to exchange server". The server
is running OK for other client machines and users - it is
only a problem on one particular desktop.
any help would be really appreciated,
