Exclude empty fields from template?

I have a word template that is pulling fields from a SQL DB (in the
format {REF EmployeeMailingAddress2}) and when a field has no data, it
prints "Error! - Reference source not found".

Is there some way to tell Word 2000 not to print anything if the field
is empty?
