I set the default open mode to Exclusive. What I expected is that if a user
had the database open another user couldn't access the database. However that
is not what is happening. Other users can access the database. What am I
doing wrong? Access 2002

mattc66,

The 'Open Exclusive' e\functionality is not a property of the database, it
is a
property of the Access session. If I recall the only way to do this is to
open Access and then navigate to the database.

Perhaps if you explained why you only want one user at a time to access your
database someone can offer a solution.

This is a database that is used to download data from an external source. If
more that one user try's to run the download at the same time they end up
deleting what the first user started.

mattc66,

Depending on how you are downloading it you might want a message to appear
that informs the other user that new data is being downloaded. Just
thinking here....

1. User opens database and starts download
2. A message gets posted to a Temp table (Download Started...) This message
would appear on the form in a bound test box.
3. Once the download is complete a new message (Download Complete...)
4. You might even consider a time date stamp that way no need to redownload
recently imported data.
