Executive Summary

I would like to add an Executive Summary as page vii of the first
section of a document. If I apply 'Heading 1' style to it, it makes
it Section 1.0 of the report. I would like the heading for Exec. Sum.
not to be numbered. How do I mark 'Executive Summary' so that it
shows up first in the TOC, but is not Section 1.0?

thanks.

Hi John:

You need to create a style for it that has an Outline Level of "Level 1" but
is not in the numbering style.

I usually use the built-in style "Title". Set it to be the same as "Heading
1", then take the numbering off it.

The "Level" property set in the TOC field code controls what appears in the
Table of Contents. That's usually set to pull in Levels 1 to 3, but you can
set it as you wish.

Conversely, you can adjust the TOC field code to explicitly pull in the
"Title" style, regardless of what level it is at.

Either method is just as good. Because you have not provided your software
versions, I can't give you specific directions.

Due to a bug, Mac Word help does not include field codes, but you can look
them up here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HP051862011033.aspx

Cheers

John, by "Set it to be the same as Heading 1", do you mean modify
the Title style definition by changing the "Style based on"
setting to a value of "Heading 1" and then set the numbering to
No Numbering? Or do you mean to just copy over all of the general
Heading 1 style configurations to the Title style?

Hi Jeff:

I normally simply display the Formatting Palette, select a Heading 1
paragraph (making sure to select the paragraph marker as well) then scroll
down to find the Title style in the bottom pane of the Styles pane of the
Formatting Palette.

Drop down the triangle at the right end of the Title style name and an
option to "Update to match selection" appears.

Use that to set the Title style to exactly the same formatting as the
Heading 1 style, then select a paragraph of Title style and use
Modify>Format>Numbering to set the Numbering of the Title style to "None".

You get an exact copy of the Heading 1 style, minus the numbering. And it
will appear in the TOC, if the TOC field code is set to "O "1-3""

It takes a lot longer to describe it than it does to do it.

Cheers
