Exel file corruption

I'm trying to open a 800KB MS Excel file that I use each day and succesfully
saved the day before. When I try to open it I get the message "the file is not
in a recognizable format" and it asks if I want to try to open it in a text
format using the text import wizard, however when it opens I can't
recognize any of the characters. It no longer resembles my spreadsheet.
Does anyone know how I can get my original file back??

.

Have you tried opening it from within Excel via the File,
Open-drop down? That has worked for me when other methods
failed.

If you have access to XL2002/2003, they have an advanced capability of
opening corrupt files.

If not, I've had success with OpenOffice:

http://openoffice.org

which runs on the X Window platform, including Apple's X11:
