Existing PPT files on powerpoint 2004

Why did they name it "office v. X" at first?

Is office 2004 a next edition of office X?

I got a little confused and have a lot of powerpoint files (word files, too)

made by using office X and now think of buying office 2004.

The existing files will work completely OK on office 2004?

And what do you think about "Keynote"

Is it better than powerpoint 2004?

Thanks,

Office 2001 was actually Office version 9 for Mac. The following version
(Office v. X) was version 10 for Mac. For some reason, they decided not to
add a year to the title and just use the version number (X = 10).

Yes. Office 2004 is actually Office version 11 for Mac.

They use the same file format, so the files should work properly.

I haven't used it at all. If you search the archives here
<http://groups.google.com/groups?q=microsoft.public.mac.office.powerpoint&hl
=en&btnG=Google+Search> as well as the Keynote discussions
<http://discussions.info.apple.com/keynote/>, you'll probably learn about
what people don't like about the two. Be warned, however, that this will
not provide a good sense of what's right with them!

Thanks,
Office vX was probably named X because it was the first native version of
Office for MacOS X

Yes, Office 2004 is the lattest version of Office for Mac

Existing Office document will be completely OK in Office 2004 BUT for some
Powerpoint document with a lot of text. In Powerpoint 2004, MS adopted Apple
recommanded API to handle text: ATSUI over the old age Quickdraw

Unfortunately, Apple's way of calculating font metrics in ATSUI is slightly
different than in Quickdraw. Therefore you might se difference in the way
text flows between PPT 2004 and PPT vX

Regarding Keynote:... Well, must be put in regards of what you want to use
it for.

For example, I use PPT to produce printed presentation. Keynote knows only
screen size, not paper size! I exchange all day long my PPT document with
Win customers ; they also embedded Excel, word tables,... This is not
supported by Keynote
