The "exit design mode" box opens with all my documents.
It turns off when I click it but returns when the doc is opend again. I've
tunred if off in the view/ toolbars section, but it the problem persists.

Most likely, each document where this happens contains an object from the
Control Toolbox, which are really ActiveX controls; and you have the macro
security level (in Tools > Macro > Security) set to high. This combination
of items causes the document to open in Design Mode, with the control
disabled.

Go to the Security dialog and set the level to medium. Then close and reopen
the document. You should see a message about macros in the document (because
Word considers ActiveX controls to be similar to macros). Click the Enable
Macros button to open the document without Design Mode.

Excellent. The suggestion by Mr. Freedman worked. I am left wondering why the
problem sudenly began appearing after years of use. Am very happy to have it
resolved. Thankyou Jay.

The resolution worked. Thankyou Mr. Freedman. I am left wondering why the
problem suddenly appeared in the 1st place.

I want to be able to open my document so that it is not in design mode, so
that the functions I created will work and people will not have to exit
design mode in order to use them. I followed the instructions you gave to
Lugan and that works but now everyone getting my document will have to enable
macros prior to opening. Is there anyway around this? Can't my document
default opening in the format I want it to?

You have two options:

1. You can buy a digital certificate from a certificate authority such
as Verisign (http://www.verisign.com) or Thawte
(http://www.thawte.com), and digitally sign the document. These
certificates cost about $200 per year. Each recipient would need to
accept the certificate once. More information is at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920627.

2. You can remove the Control Toolbox controls from your form, and use
controls from the Forms toolbar instead. That will require designing
the document as a protected form; see
http://www.computorcompanion.com/LPMArticle.asp?ID=22 for a tutorial.

For this hassle you can thank the lowlife scum that take every
opportunity to write malicious code. Or maybe you'd prefer that your
users were subject to virus infections...

Jay,
Thanks for your help (I think) I certainly didn't mean to ignite your
Microsoft fire into attack mode...I do appreciate your reply (thank you) and
now I know that having user enable macros is the easiest.

Sincerely,
Audrey
