Expand and collapse text other than outline view

Is there a way to be able to expand and collapse text while using the print
layout view?

There seems to be too many things I can't do while using the outline view.
Here are two of them.

I can't input a date by using the number pad on the keyboard. I input
12-1-09, the dashes are minus from the number pad, and the minuses do not
show up.

I can't figure out how to have an extra space above all level one lines.

1.text
A. more text
I. even more text
(insert extra line here)
2. text again
B. and so on

No.

What do you see instead?

Apply some Spacing Before to the relevant paragraph (style).

I want the date to look like 12-1-09, I see 12109.

I tried to apply the spacing before the Heading 1. It looks like what I
want in print preview, but when I print the space is not there. Here's what
I did:

From Styles and Fromatting box I selected the style, modify, format,
paragraph and changed the spacing before to 24 pt. Is this the right way?

As far as I can tell, you have done everything right.

Can you reproduce these strange errors in another document, or are they
document-specific?

The errors come up in any document I use.

I did find that if I want to insert a / * - or + from the number pad, I can
if I use shift. This is only when in outline view.

As far as spacing, the document prints exactly as it looks in the outline
view. Regardless of how much space I put before a line of text, it does not
show on the outline view.

I tried to set up the outline with styles as described in Shauna Kelly's
website, figuring it was in the set up. Same results.

I also should have mentioned earlier that I am using Word 2003.

Thanks for your help.

Wait a minute--you are *printing* from Outline view? That explains the
spacing issue, as printouts from Outline view reflect level indents as well
as the state (expanded or collapsed) of the document headings.

.... while spacing neither displays nor prints if you are using Outline view.

If I understand you correctly, printing from outline view is WYSIWYG. Which
means I will need to add spacing with extra enters.

Thank you for your help.
