Expanding Normal.dot

On one of my PCs the Normal.dot files grows every time I open Word --
I don't even have to open a document. On my other machine the
normal.dot files does not change unless I change a setting.

I found the normal.dot file over 1 meg and Word was not able to load.

Word XP with all current updates, XP Pro is the OS

Check the options in Tools | Options | Save.

Also, badly written 3rd party addins/macros can cause the Normal template to
needlessly change.
One solution is to use Windows Explorer to make the Normal template
read-only AND check the option to enable "Prompt to save Normal template".
If you then receive such prompts, the culprit is likely badly written
addins/macros.

Once you figure out the cause, you should be able to uncheck the box
enabling the prompts and keep Normal as read-only.

I keep Normal.dot read-only except when I wish to explicitly change the
critter, last time was 21 June 2005.
