Expanding the character limitation in the notes field

Maxiedw,

If you are exceeding the character limit of the notes field within Project
(while entering data) then there is no way to increase that limit.
The posting that you refer to applies only to reporting out of the database
in Project Server.

What exactly are you trying to do?

I am making a milestone planning for a programme management office an
since a lot of people don't know the whereabouts of the individua
projects, a small description of each milestone needs to be added: Wha
does the milestone mean and what systems/processes/people does i
affect. It doesn't need to be in the notes section, but I don't want t
add sublines under each milestone since there are 124 identifie
milestones and the overview would be lost completely.

Do you have another solution? Thanks a lot!

Hi maxiedw ,

Here's a possible work around. Create, say, 3 milestones (zero Duration).
Create a new filter (via Project/Filtered for.../More filters/New) for
Flag1=Yes. Insert a new column for Flag1 and mark the 1st milestone as Yes
(the rest should be No). Now you can add top level details of the Task 1
milestone in the Task Name column, and further details in the other 2
milestone tasks. Indent Tasks 2 & 3. You now have all the details on view.
Run your Flag1 filter and only Task1 milestone will be visible. Repeat for
the remaining milestones with more or less milestones indented beneath each
master one. You could also show the Name field against each milestone on
the Gantt Chart.

Hi maxiedw,

I'm not sure I follow your scenario completely. Are these
milestones in the existing project plan summary data you have
detailed in other project files? If so, have you considered
inserting a hyperlink to the full project file? No need to worry
about detailed explanations of where the project is, interested
users can just click the hyperlink and view the full information.

As an aside, I've just copied and pasted over 2000 characters from a
Word document (almost a full page of text) into a notes field
without difficulty. When printing I can print the entire note as
long as I choose the Print Notes check in the View tab of the Page
Setup dialog box. How much data are you trying to put into a note
on a task? Over a page worth of data?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

I already found the solution. Thanks for all the help. IF you just paste
within the cell there is a limitation. If you doubleclick in the cell
and go into the milestonesettings and paste in the notesfield there is
no character limitation. Weird, time-consuming.... but interesting
Microsoft-flaw.
