Explorer error message

When I try to open any Word 2000 folders or files, my
computer ( using Windows ME) locks up completely and I
have to reset. I also get an error message when I try to
Ctrl, Alt, Del. The message is "EXPLORER caused a general
protection fault in module USER.EXE at 0003:00001117"
I have searched for this message on Google and the
Microsoft site for answers to no avail. Can anyone help?
