After I installed Sharepoint Designer 2007 Beta on my XP SP2 system, any time
I would access my machine remotely using Terminal Services, my explorer.exe
(of the host machine where Designer was installed) would get stuck in a crash
loop until I closed the remote session. A trip to the event viewer on the
host shows the following:
Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module
msonsext.dll, version 12.0.4017.1003, fault address 0x00074bbe.
This later progressed into a more serious issue when the crash loop started
to occur when sitting at the machine logged in via the console itself.
Designer 2k7 installs an updated msonsext.dll in C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders and is the root of my conflict.
I replaced the updated msonsext.dll (version: 12.0.4017.1003) with an
msonsext.dll from an Office 2003 install on a different machine (version:
11.0.5510.0). After I reverted the .dll file, both Office and Designer still
work, and I am able to Term in without anymore explorer.exe crashes.
Is Office 2k7 a pre-requisite of Sharepoint Designer? I am running Office
2k3 and wonder if this is the problem. If it is not, this appears to be a bug
of some sort.
