explorer freezes when running an office 2003 update

When running "search for updates" under explorer, my explorer freezes and I
have to run task manager to close it. This only happens for Office. If I do a
Windows update it completes with no problem. I am using the following:

XP Pro SP1
Office with Contact manager and SP1
Latest Explorer

Note, this even happens when running Windows in safe mode

This sounds like it may be a spyware problem. You can get information on
cleaning spyware at http://www.microsoft.com/spyware
