How do I add an exponent to a number in Word.

Easiest & most straightforward - although perhaps not technically exact -
select the exponent character then either key Shift+Command+= or use Format>
Font> Font tab, check the box for Superscript. You can also use the
keystroke Shift+Command+= to toggle Superscript on/of as you work.
