Exponential increase in file size in Word 2003

I experienced this problem with a 504 page Word file. The original
file size wss 14394368 Bytes. After doing minor editorial edits, the
file size increased by about 7 MB with every save. Eventually the file
size was 72875520 Bytes. Zipped down it was 7MB - too big to email to
the client - and consequently the deadline was missed. I found the
culprit to be "Embed linguistic data" in Tools -> Options -> Save.
Unchecking this option dropped the file size down to a manageable 13
MB. Whatever the benefit of this option may be, it is clearly
completely contraproductive. What were the Word developers thinking
when they built this into the product? I suspect that product testing
is done with small "Hello world" files. If they would like, I could
send them actual real world document to use in testing...
