exported image shows as black

I imported a flyer into Publisher to cut out an image using the word wrap to
eliminate the undesirable background. When I pasted it into Quark the entire
shape/image is black! Can I fix this?

Word wrap is just that, it doesn't alter the image. Might experiment with edit
points.

Use the transparency tool and save the picture as a .png. Insert into Quark
rather than paste.

Well, that makes sense, but I can't figure out how to activate the
transparency tool. I imported from a pdf. Is that my problem?

Doesn't Quark have some graphics editing capabilities? Can you paste the picture
in the Publisher document?
When you select the picture in Publisher, do any of the picture tools become
active? Do you have any idea what format the image is?
