Exporting a project into Visio as a flow chart

Rachmur

Hi,

I am trying to create a simplistic view of a project with well over 100
tasks into a visual representation, preferably, a flow chart for presentation
purposes.

I was hoping to export all tasks and dependencies into Microsoft Visio to
display a flowchart. I want to be able to do this so I can easily present
updates without managing two, parallel pieces of work.

I don't know if this is possible. Can anyone help? Or other ideas would be
appreciated

Hi Rachmur,

You don't mention what version of Project you are using, but in Project 2003
on the Analysis toolbar there is a "Visio WBS Chart Wizard" that will handle
the export. I don't believe it was available in earlier releases.

If you are using a pre-2003 release does the Network Diagram View work for
your needs?

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi JulieS,

Unfortunately the version I have is 2000 and the Network diagram is not
suitable either. Thanks for trying tho

Hi Rachmur,

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Thanks for the feedback and perhaps
another responder will have a better solution.

Hi,

Hmmm...just brainstorming here - could you export to some data format (csv,
xls, mdb) and import into Visio or KVivio?

This sounds intriguing...

What's wrong with the network diagram? That *is* a flowchart of the project
process if your WBS has been done correctly. If it's not, you really need
to re-examine the identification and linking of the tasks in your project
file before doing anything else because your WBS probably isn't a valid
model.

You didn't mention which version of Visio you're using. Since Visio 2000,
there has been a macro that imports Project mpp files and creates Gantt
charts, PERT charts (network diagram), or calendars in Visio from the data.
Unfortunately it was broken in Visio 2000 and I've never seen it work
properly in that version - the problem is in Visio itself and not dependent
on the Project version. But the good news is that it was fixed in
Visio2002/XP and later and works fine in the more recent versions. You'll
find it under Macros in the Visio Tools menu.
