exporting the Address book from ME to XP

Daniel Schell

I copied my contacts from my old computer under Windows ME
to my new computer with Windows XP; all my
contacts are intact, but my address book is completely
blank. Does anybody know how to restore the address book?
Thanks for your help.

Hello,

My version of Outlook 2000 9.0.0.2711
Internet mail only
- I know that the Internet mail only might cause problems.
SO i Uninstalled Office 2000 then re-installed but it
keeps that way)

I met already this problem once, when coming from
Netscape, to OE, and then to Outlook.

At this time you suggested:

"Not sure you'll need to change, it's just that IMO
provides no option to
repair or reconfigure the Outlook Address Book (because it
actually uses the
Windows Address Book).
One thing you can try: repair your Outlook PST file using
the Inbox Repair
Tool (scanpst.exe). Then go into the Windows Address Book
(that's in OE, not
Outlook), open the Address Book and in Tools > Options
disable sharing,
restart OE and re-enable sharing. That _might_ reset the
connection to your Contacts Folder."

We did that but nothing comes.
Again, on the new computer with XP professional, we cannot
create a relationship between the adrees book and the
contact list. And of course we need our distribution lists
in the address book.

Thanks for your precious help.

Start at the beginning and state your question more clearly, including what
you did and what isn't working now.
All you need to do is configure Outlook to use the same PST as you were
using before. IMO provides no ability to repair the Outlook Address Book
Service because it doesn't use it.

To use another PST file (such as one from an earlier installation) and set
it to be the default for your current installation of Outlook, you will
first need to know the location and name of the PST file you'd like to use
as your new default. Then use the following directions for IMO:
- File menu > Open > Personal Folders file > migrate to the new PST file
location to open it
- Right-click on the root of the new set of folders in the folder pane (View
Folder List)
- Choose Properties
- Check the "Deliver POP mail" box
- Quit & restart Outlook
- Now you can Close the PST file that you were previously using (R-click on
that pst folder while in Folder View and select "Close <foldername>
Folders"). If you have any information in your former PST that you'd like to
transfer to your new default PST, you can drag and drop from one to the
other before you close the old one.
