Exporting to Excel problem

TomL

I am exporting to Excel from MS Project 2003 Pro SP3 and Microsoft Office
2003, on an XP box.

I use the wizard, and I am told that "you are trying to save a file in an
older file format..." I can continue past this point, but when I open the
file in Excel and go to save it, I am told that the file was created in
5.0/95 format, and asked if I want to update it.

Why is Project 2003 opting for such an old file format, and is there
anything I can do to change that? I have searched options, but I don't see
that setting.

I could live with this annoyance, but we are working on a process for other
people to follow, and they will balk at the extra steps and "error" message.

Thanks for the help.

Think way back to when Project 2003 came out and you'll remember that
Excel 5.0/95 was still in common use. Could it be that the right export
program not installed on your machine? This all I can think of at the
moment. What happens when you go back to the install disk and see what
other options are available to install. Project 2003 on my machine
(installed in May this new machine) outputs to 97-2003 xls format).

Under Tools, Options Security Tab, select the allow loading files with
legacy or non default file formats. This option was added by SP3

Thanks, but I still don't understand why it is saving to Excel 95. It is a
brand new computer, and had SP3 loaded from the beginning.

I will have to check with my Help Desk. It is a brand new computer, and it
went straight to SP3.

Hi Tom,

If you are using the "Export timephased data to Excel" wizard, it
was originally created for Excel 95. I don't believe the wizard has
been re-written since then. The wizard is gone from Project 2007.

As Rod noted, to avoid the issue with the "trying to save message"
enable loading of legacy file formats.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

I think it saves to an old format because no features from newer versions
are required. Therefore anyone with any Excel version can read it.
