External Hard Drives Securities and Permissions

I have 2 Maxtor Hard drives that were originally formated
NTFS on a Windows 2000 machine. Securities and
permissions were applied. I have now hooked these up to
my XP Home and am getting "Access Denied" What to do?
Can I access and change the settings somewhere in the
reqistry or will I have to connect them back to a 2000
machine and change the security and permissions?
