Linking tasks in external projects creates an extremely long string. For example:

D:\Documents and Settings\jacobsp\Desktop\Project Test\Project3.mpp\3,D:\Documents and Settings\jacobsp\Desktop\Project Test\Project3.mpp\6

Is there a way to default (rename) the common path information (D:\Documents and Settings\jacobsp\Desktop\Project Test) and only show the Project.mpp\task id protion?

All subprojects are in the same folder.

No.
You could conceivably write some VBA which would strip out those parts of it
and store the information in one of the text fields, but you wouldn't be
able to work with them.
