External Links

Hi,
I have a sheet where jobs are entered as a list, col A is the job number.
This joblist.xls file is 2.2 Mb

I have an invoice template where in col A i enter job numbers and col's B-E
pull up names and prices using vlookup from c:\mydocuments\joblist.xls

Yesterday my computer packed in but i have managed to get these files onto a
new machine, however when i launch the invoice template i get a message
'...links to external....do you wish to update. (It never used to ask this
as long as i ws using both docs in the same instance of excel).
If i click yes I get 'not enough memory'. If i click no obviously the info
is not there.
Since it never did this before im guessing i can remedy this, its the same
version of excel and the memory (256Mb) is the same.

Can somebody point me in the right direction to sort this out.
Many thanks,
Rick

I can't say for sure, but it sounds like the links are pointing to the old
location. Excel tries to resolve that location, but can't, and there must
be some kind of memory leak in the process. Try this: Answer no when you
open the sheet and go to Edit>Links. Try to Change Source to point to
joblist.xls at its new location and see if that doesn't solve it.

Hi Rick,

Try opening both files, say NO to update links, then use Edit--Links--Change
source to the other file even though its open.
Then save the file

Thanks both of you, but that didn't help.
What i have noticed however when investigating these links is that the main
document i am linking to has links to an external document that it shouldnt,
and this must have been done by accident. Can i find which cells are linking
and is this likely to be the cause of my problem?

Again thanks guys,
Ive found the stray link and deleted it.
Still getting no joy with my initial problem...
Opening an invoice template with external lookups, pops up box about
external links, then not enough memory error...
However it does seem to be intermittent, and i cant see what im doing
differently when i do manage to make it work, it seems to work OK about 30
percent of the time.
Ive checked all the links in the invoice template and they all seem OK.

If anyone has any other ideas they would be greatly appreciated'

I dont know if it is pertinent but above my toolbar where it says 'ready' it
also says 'calculate'
