An extra page is always generated by *something* on the page, usually an
empty paragraph. You can see this by pressing Ctrl+* to display nonprinting
characters.
Are these snaking (newspaper-style) columns? If so, you've probably got a
Continuous section break at the end of the three-column section, and the
break requires an empty paragraph following. If the columns fill the page,
then the section break is not necessary in order to balance the columns. You
can delete it, but you'll need to reformat the document into three columns
(unless you format the last section into three columns before removing the
break).
If the columns are in a table, then the problem is still an empty paragraph
following the table, but this cannot be deleted; it is required to hold the
document/section-level formatting. You can, however, use Format Font to
change the size to 1 point or make it Hidden (make sure that the paragraph
spacing is set to Single).
