extra spaces between paragraphs

when I am writing a document in Word 2004 in normal view everything looks fine. However when I go to print, Word inserts 10-15 extra blank lines between some or all of paragraphs. This doesn't show up in normal view, but when I go page layout, the extra lines appear. I'm not able to delete these extra lines and can't see anything obvious in formatting that would account for it. Any ideas? Is there a default style that I could go to that would take care of this?

Hi Bewick;

If the space doesn't display in Normal View but does display in Page Layout
View the most likely causes are: a) graphic objects - including text boxes -
which have no content, fill or border, or b) graphic objects which *do* have
physical properties but the Preferences are set to not display them.

First, go to Word> Preferences - View to make sure there is a check in the
box for Drawings and no check in the box for Image Placeholders. That should
reveal any floating graphic objects with substance that weren't being
displayed before. If the objects still don't show up...

Display the Drawing Toolbar, select the Select Objects tool then click in
one of the "dead zones". That should select the invisible object so you can
then delete it or reformat it as you wish to make it visible.

If neither helps rectify the problem turn on the Non-printing Characters (¶)
to see what shows up in those areas. If you're still getting nowhere it's
about time to confirm that Office & OS X are fully updated and that you have
the most current printer driver installed.

It's also possible that you're dealing with a corrupt Normal template so you
might want to test for that next. The instructions are here:

Post back with your results - based on your description this could be
interesting if it needs to be investigated further :)

One other rather obscure possibility is that the Page properties
are set for vertical alignment of "Justified" which means it's
not adding extra lines but rather adding extra space between the
lines to fill from the top to the bottom of the page.
