Extracting data from MDE

I have recently received an MDE database and would like to
extract the data from it to a spreadsheet - now I
understand that an MDE is a Microsoft Access database file
with all modules compiled and all editable source code
removed. The MDE is locked down, which means that I cannot
extract the data through the Access GUI, or can I?

If I cannot do anything within Access, can Excel or any
other application be used to import data from the MDE?
