extracting invisible images

I have a Word doc which was created many years ago as an image store in,
I think, Word'97, I'd now like to access some of the images.

When I open the document in Word 2002 / XP SP2 the first two images
display OK but later ones give an error message "there is not enough
memory or disk space to display or print the images" and are displayed
as empty rectangles (NB empty rectangles, there is no red X). The PC has
1GB or RAM. and many GBs or disc space spare. The source document is
30MB, if I save it from Word 2002 it reduces to 3MB.

In the past (many years back) I've been able to extract the images (I
think this would have been using Office '97 and Win NT4), so far I've
tried installing Word '97, but get the same error; saving as an HTML
file but just get a blank HTML document; saving the document from Word
2002 and reopening it.

Any thoughts of other ways to access the images? I don't really want to
have to build an NT4/Office '97 machine if I can avoid it.
