Extraneous "%3E"

S

Sue Donum

Lately, I'm finding that hotlinks in my emails don't always work properly.
In particular, links to images at ImageShack frequently take me to the
ImageShack home page instead of the page they're supposed to take me to. I
checked my History file in Safari, and noticed that when that happens, the
link Safari _first_ tried to take me to was the link that I clicked on in
the email, but with the addition of "%3E" after the end of the URL. So (I
assume), since Safari couldn't figure out what to do, it took me to the
ImageShack home page instead.

Any idea why clicking on the link adds the extraneous "%3E" to the end of
the URL?

Is the entire link blue and underlined in Entourage, or is only a part of
the URL clickable? See if holding down the Cmd key while clicking the link
gets you to the correct page.

That's not it...but I think I see what's going on, though I don't understand
why...

For example, during a post and a reply post, a link that originally appeared
as

<http://img149.imageshack.us/my.php?image=emailininboxmacbookhx6.png>

suddenly appears as

<http://img149.imageshack.us/my.php?image=emailininboxmacbookhx6.png_>

In other words, the underscore is extended beyond the original URL, and this
causes the problem. So, if you click in the first link (from an actual post
in this forum), you will be brought to the correct page at ImageShack.
However, if you click on the second link, you end up at the ImageShack home
page (for this post, I had to "artificially" create the kind of link I'm
talking about...not sure how it will come out once I post it, but in my
draft folder, it seems to replicate what I've been experiencing.)

Any idea why some of the links in some of my messages are getting
corrupted?:

Some hyperlink issues were fixed around the 12.1.2 or 12.1.3 update. Is
your Entourage 2008 fully patched to 12.1.5?

From Get Info:

"Version: 12.1.5 (081119), © 2007
Microsoft Corporation. All rights
reserved."

(I only installed Office 2008 two weeks ago. IIRC, it was automatically
patched as soon as I did the installation.)

Hey, a guy's gotta work for a living! ;-)

So, I looked up the "%3E" character in an HTML encoding reference
<http://www.w3schools.com/TAGS/ref_urlencode.asp> and it represents the
"greater than" character or ">".

So, what you're seeing is an unconverted end-of-link character. We use
them to wrap links here because many mail applications understand that
those very long URLs that wrap between lines should be treated as one
link when enclosed between "<" and ">".

Question: Who is sending you these messages that have the "corrupted"
links? Are all links corrupted? Are all looooong links corrupted
regardless of who sends them?

Is it in emails or just the forum messages? I experienced that with a link
you posted in another message.

Get the make tiny url script and you can easily make long urls short so you
don't get this problem.

<http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2008/09/create_a_tinyurl.html>

In case the above link does not work:

<http://tinyurl.com/5w78mn>

It only happens in NG messages, and only in those where I use an ImageShack
link, and (for the most part) only in those that are included in a _reply_
to my original post in which I included the ImageShack link.

My sense is that it's not all that correlated to the length of the URL. I
have used TinyURL! before (it occupies a permanent place in my Safari menu
bar) when the URL is clearly long, but it's never been necessary with
ImagShack postings before -- it just suddenly began to happen a few days
ago.

Moi. ;)
Are all links corrupted?

It seems to be restricted to NG replies that include my original post in
which I included an ImageShack link.

Are all looooong links corrupted
Nope.

regardless of who sends them?

Nope.
