extranet or Intranet notifications from Project Server

We have people both inside (intranet) and outside (extranet) working with
project server for MS Project. Under Admin>Server Configuration you
apparantly can e-mail links to resources and the system either sends an
intranet or extranet address. How can this be contolled? How does Project
Server know who gest which address to use?

It may be that this is for the front end-back end project server
configuration. I have them both set the same.
