Extras10 Font

Hi,

I am recieving this message when launching Microsoft Word... "The font
Extras10 is corrupt and should be removed" as seen here....

http://homepage.mac.com/jeanbourget/error.png

If I quit out of word and re-launch it, the font menu displays
strangely as seen here...

http://homepage.mac.com/jeanbourget/menu.png

I have tried using a "clean" version of the font and I still have the
same issue. Also, I am using Suitcase Fusion and it is not complaining
about the font. Also, I can use the font in other apps. Any thoughts
about why this is happnening?

Sincerely,
Christopher

What happens if you remove the font entirely (and clean the font caches,
etc.)? m.

Hi Matt,

If I remove the font, there is no issue. I guess what I am trying to
get at is that the font works fine in other apps, and Suitcase scans
the font and it passes its corruption checks, so why is Word having an
issue with it?

BTW, how do I clean the font caches as you mentioned?

Hi Christopher,

Quit out of Word and trash the Office font cache:
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Font Cache (11). Relaunch Word.

If that doesn't do it, post back.

Ok, so i tried that. And I also installed a new version that was
emailed to me from the creator of the font... "Here is the copy that I
use on my Mac. It doesn't give any problems in Word
as you descriibe and there are tens of thousands of downloads of this
particular font with no other reports of problems."

Any thoughts?

Hi C.B.,

I think I'm stuck! You've trashed the Office font cache. You've got a
"clean" copy of the font installed. And according to the font's creator, no
one else reports problems using this font in Mac Word. All I can do now is
make some additional (probably not too helpful) suggestions/questions:

1. One other thing to try: Trash your system font caches in addition to
the Office font cache. Quit Word before you do this. These are the files
to trash:

Office Font Cache: ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Font Cache (11)

Com.apple.ATS.plist (Home/Library/Prefs)
Com.apple.ATS (/Library/Caches)
FontTablesAnnex ( /System/Library/Caches)
All other files whose names include .ATS or font found in
/System/Library/Caches, especially com.apple.ATS.System.fcache and
com.apple.ATSServer.FODB_System

Note: Do not trash the Font Cache Tool.

After dragging the caches to the trash, log out, reboot and *then* empty the
trash.

2. Have you used Font Book (or a third-party font application) to insure
that you only have *one* copy of this font currently on your computer?

3. Which font folder do you have the font in (though it shouldn't matter)?

4. Do you get a similar error with any other font?

5. Do you have Office/Word fully updated? What about your OS? See here
for more: <http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/Update.htm>
(If using Safari, hit Refresh once or twice; better yet, use another browser
for this site.)

Hope something here helps.

1. One other thing to try: Trash your system font caches in addition
to
the Office font cache. Quit Word before you do this. These are the
files
to trash:

==> I already tried this and it did not help.

2. Have you used Font Book (or a third-party font application) to
insure
that you only have *one* copy of this font currently on your computer?

==> I am using Suitcase Fusion. I do not us the Font Book. And I only
have one copy of this font.

3. Which font folder do you have the font in (though it shouldn't
matter)?

==> I tried putting it on my fonts folder in my library in my home
folder, but that didn't help. I usually just load it with Suitcase.

4. Do you get a similar error with any other font?

==> No, never.

5. Do you have Office/Word fully updated? What about your OS? See
here
for more: <http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/Update.htm>
(If using Safari, hit Refresh once or twice; better yet, use another
browser
for this site.)

==> Yes, and yes.

I am at a loss as to what else to try.

Any further thoughts?

Sincerely,
Christopher

Hi C.B.,

Re: #1: Did you trash the *other* font cache files that I listed, not just
the Office font cache?

Can you use this font with other applications on your computer? What about
other *Office* applications?

If the answer to all these questions is Yes, then I'm sorry but I don't know
what else to suggest. Anyone else?

Beth

Yes, I tried what you suggested.

Can you use this font with other applications on your computer? What
about
other *Office* applications?

I get the same error in the other Office apps, however I can use this
in all other applications like Photoshop, etc.

Hi Christopher,

Since this only seems to happen in Office apps, the only suggestion I have
left is to remove and then reinstall Office. I do not hold out high hopes
that this will help, but I'm out of other ideas. If you decide to proceed,
please follow the procedure you'll find here:
<http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/RemoveReinstall.htm>
(If using Safari, hit Refresh once or twice; better yet, use another
browser.)

HI Beth,

Ok, I will think about it and then decide what to do. Thank you so much
for your patience and for your help. If I get it working I will follow
up with another post.

Hi Christopher,

Please do. If you get this font working, I'd sure like to know how :).

Beth,

Ok, so I did some further testing since I have an extra Mac here. I
erased the HD, installed Tiger from scratch, upgraded to 10.4.5,
installed Office 2004, upgraded it using the auto updater, installed
Suitcase Fusion, installed Extras 10, and I get "The font Extras 10 is
corrupt and should be removed" when launching any Office app (like
Word). So now I feel comfortable that this is reproducible. It could be
the font, or Suitcase Fusion, or this Office version, or Tiger 10.4.5,
but something is definitely wrong. Any further help would be greatly
appreciated.

Send me the font and I'll test it without Suitcase Fusion. m.

Matt,

I emailed the font to you, but I do not check my gmail account very
often, so please just reply here to this post.

Also, please know that I get the same error even if I quit out of
Suitcase Fusion and install the font manually.

I installed the font and opened Word and Word didn't complain. I was
able to switch to the font (it's some sort of weird right-angle symbol
thing, but it does seem to work).

Perhaps you've got a font conflict of some sort? I take it you tried
FontFinagler. m.
