F4 or Ctrl-Y Repeat the Last Action

We have recently upgraded to Word 2003. Occasionally when users press F4 to
repeat the last action (usually typing text that repeats throughout the
document), everything but the first character of the word they typed appears.
Has anyone seen that and do you know a fix? I have not been able to
duplicate this at will - it's just an occasional problem that I hear about
after it happens.

If the typed text replaced selected text, then the first character is a
separate Undo/Redo operation (if you look at the Undo list, you will see
this). That is, the first character counts as a replacement, and the rest
are "typing." I also find this disconcerting (and at times embarrassing,
when I don't notice that my Undo has not reinstated the replaced text).
