Facing Page Layout Problem

D

Dominic

I am trying to set up a document so that the pages are
laid out facing each other. However, I only want the
document text to appear on the right hand side (odd page
numbers) leaving the left hand side (even pages) clear to
place graphics and drawings.
I know a nasty workaround solution is to insert a bunch of
page breaks, but this quickly turns into a nightmare when
i edit the text.
Is there a way to specify that the text will only flow on
the right hand pages?

I would really appreciate any help with!
thank you
Dominic

Why not just create only odd pages? You can do this using a calculated page
number. Instead of a { PAGE } field, use this construction:

{ = { PAGE } * 2 - 1 }

You must insert each pair of field delimiters (the things that look like
braces but can't be typed from the keyboard) by pressing Ctrl+F9.

If you also need even pages for the graphics (that is, if you're going to
paste them in electronically rather than physically), create a second file
with page numbers in the format

{ = { PAGE } * 2 }

Note that you will not be able to create an automatic TOC or index using
calculated page numbers, but aside from that, it's not a bad workaround.

I'm afraid there really isn't any way to do this in Word as it now exists.

Oh well. Wishful thinking on my part. (maybe it's a
reason to upgrade to 2003?!)

Thank you for your time - much appreciated!

No, I don't believe this is possible in Word 2003, and I'm not sure it will
ever be possible in Word.

Hi Suzanne
thank you for the reply - what you have suggested does
make sense...
but..
i would prefer to keep it in one document so that i can
use word to generate all the refences, table of contents,
etc.. It is a large document of approx 100 pages and i was
hoping for a more "in built" solution.
Surely there is a way somehow to set formatting properties
that stop text from going on the left pages. I have tried
playing with the margins (hoping to leave just 1mm of text
column) on the left page, but Word won't let me do that -
it insists on having proper column widths!
If you have any other suggestions, I would appreciate the
advice.
Thank you once again for your time,
Dominic

Hi

Excuse me for barging in like this, but what papersize should the
document be? Could you do something with the 2 pages per sheet option
in Word, and use a macro to print the pages? I'm thinking about adding
one empty page at the back of the document, and print that on every
left page?

Hi Richard and Dominic,

1. Barging in is always encouraged here. Feel free.

2. The way I read Dominic's request he needed to have text
flow *around* the empty left-hand page, and since there's
no real "page object" in the Word model, it's not likely
that'll ever be possible.

Hi All -
Thank you for the replies. Mark, you are right - what I
was looking for was something more similar to a
proper "page" structure like you might find in a proper
DTP program (eg InDesign).
I'm getting the very clear message that this is definetly
not possible within Word.
Pity!

Hi Dominic,

The vocabulary of Microsoft or Bill Gates may contain the phrase 'not
possible', but I think there must be a way to do this. I remember some
trick that was published about 4 years ago, where you put an invisible
and opaque white image in the header of the even pages. I'll check
whether that gives the desired effect.

Hi Richard -
I see where you are going with this.. nice suggestion!
I found that it is possible to expand the headers and
footers on the even pages to the point where they
*almost* fill the page - but MsWord still insists on
leaving enough text space for a minium one line. So
unfortunately it comes close but does not work!!!
IF you do get it to work, could you please email me a
sample file?
Thank you
Dominic

Instead of expanding the headers/footers (with empty paragraphs or the
like), you could anchor a full-page text box or rectangle to the header
paragraph. To work, though, it would have to be formatted as In Line with
Text.

Suzanne,

I thought of that too but In Line With Text is grayed
out for textboxes (Word 2000). Is this is 2002-and-up
option?

Suzanne S. Barnhill

Yes.
