faded connector lines

I'm trying to create a flowchart but I can't select my connector lines. For
some reason, they are the only option in Auto Shapes that are faded. I've
tried selecting and unselecting existing auto shapes in my drawing, but that
doesn't seem to make a difference? Any suggestions?

Hi Amie,

In Word the connectors work only when you are using
the Drawing Canvas (Insert=>Picture=>New Drawing)
to hold your shape elements.
In Powerpoint, where each slide is a 'canvas' they
are active all of the time.
