Failed Merge: Word2002 cannot read data in parameter query.

In new Office 2002 installation, Word document which is
linked to an Access parameter queries fails with a message
that Word could not read data. Query runs fine on its
own. This has been replicated on 3 machines, and with
Northwinds database as well. Suggestions for a badly
needed fix?
