Failed SP1 installation Office and Onenote

D

Dan

I have review several post, but none matches exactly what
I am seeing. Like some of the other people, I have tried
both auto downloads and downloading the full installation
files and all I get is a message that says installation
is unsucessful for both products with no clue as to why.
No drives have been changed, product id shows up in
help, and there is no request for a CD as I had left the
installation files in place. I have had no problems with
previous updates for Office 2003. The Office installation
was from an action pak subscription I have and the
OneNote was a full retail package I bought before it was
released in the subscription. Is this going to be a
problem for my clients also. My test machine is running
XP Pro with all updates installed.
Thanks, Dan

Dan, can you put the log files from your '%temp%\ohotfix' folder in a Zip
file and attach it in a reply to this thread? I'll take a look at your log
files.

Mr. Crayton,
I am send zip via email as I do not see anywhere here
to attach file. I have noticed that the product guid
numbers in the registry does not seem to match what the
installation log is looking for, or may be I am looking
at the wrong place. My bigger concern is having to do
time consuming fixes at some of my clients.

Dan--

In addition to the logs that Sloan has, could you go to "Event Vwr" by
putting "event vwr.msc" in your run box, click on Application and scroll
down to the time of the failed install with MsiInstaller as the source and
click on these errors and paste whatever is there by hitting the symbol
under the down arrow (will put the info on a clipboard and you can copy
here). There have to be some errors generated in the Event Vwr. with 4
digit numbers for the error messages, like for example Error 1603. I don't
think the EVent ID has any value unless you are a MSFT engineer, but Sloan
may know if it does. However, the four digit number "Error 1603" for
example would enable us to link it to an MSKB.

I have not seen any event ID's work in this lookup provided by MSFT Technet:
http://tinyurl.com/2enhf

This is supposed to be Technet's lookup for them.

Also here is a reference for you and Technet has a webcast for Event Viewer:

Using Event Viewer
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...ome/using/productdoc/en/snap_event_viewer.asp

Make sure if you had a preview of One Note SP1 that you uninstall it before
installing One Note SP1, and if that's not an issue you can try running a
detect and repair, a repair install from Add/Remove, or uninstalling and
reinstalling One Note using the Windows Install Cleanup Utility:

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

From Sloan Crayton's[MS] explanation of the Utility:

"The function of the utility is to remove the remove the corrupted Windows
Installer registry information for an application that was installed via the
Windows Installer. There are several things that it does not do ...

- It does not uninstall any applications
- It does not delete the Windows Installer

After using this utility, the application should then be installed again
sothat Setup will function (otherwise, the Windows Installer has no
information that it was ever installed). If the real objective is to remove
a product, it can be uninstalled after this reinstall has occurred."

Best,

Chad Harris

Milly--

Thanks.

It looks like a good site, and maybe I need to learn to use it --I'll try it
again. I have never been able to do anything useful with the Event
*Numbers*, and I read the fairly sparse Help on Event Viewer to see if I
could find something on it, but I couldn't. I put several event numbers in
the search boxes and came up empty, so maybe there is some other way I
should be searching or some kind of search filters or variables to make them
come up. The site came up yesterday when I googled "Event Number". If you
run accross any other references for Event Numbers I'd appreciate seeing
them. Those and the way to use PID Numbers in Task Manager have been equally
elusive to me.

Sloan Crayton [MS]

For everyone else, Dan's log files and registry dump confirmed that he's run
into a problem that some other folks have encountered. Registry cleanup
utilities will sometimes (and in Dan's case it did) remove needed registry
keys. The Local Install Source feature stores information about the
original installation source location, and the registry cleanup utility
removed these keys (we don't know why yet, but we're looking into it).
We've found that replacing these keys with the correct information can allow
the SP1 installation to complete successfully (if nothing else causes a
failure).

We will investigate fixing this for the next Office 2003 service pack, and
I'll work on creating a KB article this week so that folks can figure out
what is happening on their own and fix the problem. Unfortunately, we don't
have a good error message for this failure, and diagnosis requires examining
a log file and the registry.
