Failure to hyperlink to files on external drive

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC

Hyperlink works when opening file from localhost but not if file is on USB stick. In this instance, USB stick has to function as main storage device as I regularly have to transfer files between my Mac @ home and Windows PCs @ work.

Note that the file I am trying to hyperlink from is on the USB stick.

Can anyone confirm whether a hyperlink set up within MS Word 2004 running on a Mac would be likely to survive transfer to a PC running Word for Windows?

Could it be that I'm simply wasting my time trying to achieve something that's simply beyond the powers of Microsoft?

Thanks for any enlightenment.

You're wasting your time :)

It's not "beyond the power" of Microsoft, it's something they intentionally
prevent. Hyperlinks are specifically designed not to do this.

Look up the INCLUDETEXT field in the Help: that would do what you want.

However, please be aware that the mechanism by default assumes explicit
path-names. These will not survive the move from Mac to PC.

You can force INCLUDETEXT to use "no" pathnames, and if you do, and if the
source and target documents are all in the same folder, that will survive
cross-platform.

Basically: Insert your INCLUDETEXTs, then reveal your field codes and
search/replace the path out of them. Save the document and that will stick.

Hope this helps
