Failure to Lauch

I re-installed my operaing system a couple of weeks ago. Since then,
Excell, Word and Powerpoint fail to lauch during the "optimizing font
menu performance" part of launch. However, Entourage is working just
fine! I reinstalled my font program thinking this might solve the
start up problem but it did not. I am missing my installation cd for
office so I cannot reinstall. Any help would be wonderful.

Delete these files in ~/Library/Caches:
com.microsoft.browserfont.cache
tasmanbrowser.cache

I also suggest running the Apple Combo updater again. Doing so has been
known to solve unusual situations like this. You'll find download links for
the latest combo updater here:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/combo.html>

Office stores it's fonts in the Microsoft Office 2004/ Office/Fonts folder.
I believe you can trigger a first run by removing this preferences folder
(the ³Microsoft² located under ³/your_user_name/Library/Preferences/²).

More help using fonts can be found here:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/bad_font.html>

Let me know what you find.

Thank You for your response Diane!
I am still having trouble though. Let me go though what I did.

1. I went to "Delete these files in ~/Library/Caches:
com.microsoft.browserfont.cache, tasmanbrowser.cache" but found none
with these names.

2. I went to "Office stores it's fonts in the Microsoft Office 2004/
Office/Fonts folder. I believe you can trigger a first run by removing
this preferences folder (the ³Microsoft² located under ³/
your_user_name/Library/Preferences/²)." But found no microsoft folder
to remove.

3. I ran "Disk Utility" and fixed permissions like the instructions
said to before updating. I downloaded the Apple Combo updater. Updated
my files. Restarted the computer. Entaorage still works fine.
Additionally, Excell and Powerpoint lauch and work fine. Word does
not.

4. I re-read instructions for updating and it said to run disk utility
before updating and after. So I ran disk utility again and fixed
permissions. Now, Entourage is still working fine. Excell and
Powerpoint will no longer lauch. Word is launching and working fine.

I cannot figure out why the programs would switch around like that. Do
I need to run the updater again? Also, when I checked the info for
all programs, they still say version 10.0.0. Should they say 10.4.9 if
the updater worked?

Were the fonts still in the Microsoft Office 2004/Office/Fonts folder?

Check again in your User's preferences folder for a folder named Microsoft.
When an application is launched it should automatically install this folder.

The last Office update is 10.1.9. They way to tell if the updater was
applied is to check the version number of the Microsoft Component Plugin:

Microsoft Office 2004/Office/ Microsoft Component Plugin

Not all applications are updated with each update. Currently:

Entourage 10.1.6
Excel 10.1.9
Word 10.1.8
PowerPoint 10.1.9

FWIW, once you get Office X installed correctly, you will be using "End of
Life" software that is not updated for the new Daylight Saving Time change.

"Were the fonts still in the Microsoft Office 2004/Office/Fonts
folder?"
Yes there were 15 fonts in the folder

"Check again in your User's preferences folder for a folder named
Microsoft. When an application is launched it should automatically
install this folder."
I found the folder and removed it. Tried to restart Ent,
Exc, Word, sill no launch. They still get hung up on "optimizing font
menu performance" (Word was working yesterday after install and Disk
Permissions but not since I logged on this morning)

"The last Office update is 10.1.9. They way to tell if the updater was
applied is to check the version number of the Microsoft Component
Plugin: Microsoft Office 2004/Office/ Microsoft Component Plugin"
Component Plugin is version 10.0.0 last modified in 2001. I am
going to try again to install the update and see what happens.

I reinstalled the upgrade. Ent, Exc, and Word still will not launch. I
checked the component plugin and it still says version 10.0.0 from
2001. Is the upgrade not taking effect?

I'm having the same problem - have had this for over a week now - I
cannot launch any Office 2004 apps except Messenger.
When i click on any app in the dock, the icon in the bounces twice and
then stops - nothing opens visually.
Using the terminal app to check the system log - at the end of /var/
log/system.log are the following lines after trying to launch Word,
Excel, PowerPoint & Entourage

Apr 11 18:21:34 MacBook-Pro /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/
Microsoft Word: CGGStackRestore: gstack underflow.
Apr 11 18:21:39 MacBook-Pro /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/
Microsoft PowerPoint: CGGStackRestore: gstack underflow.

I've uninstalled Microsoft Office manually following the link to the
microsoft support page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323675/en-us
I've run Disk Uitility and repaired permissions.

I'm ready to reinstall the OS because I am at a loss here. Any
thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm running 10.4.9 and I upgraded a couple of weeks ago.

Run the Apple Combo updater and see if that helps.

Is there any reason why the upgrade is not taking effect after I run
it? It goes through the whole install process, restart, etc.

It could be because the install is too bad too upgrade. It could be bad
sectors on your hard drive, or bad RAM.

I would use "Remove Office" then install again and update.

I can't reinstall. My boss can't find the installation cd and
even if he did find the cd, it would not run because the cd would try
to install on classic and classic does not work on my comp since the
tiger update.

Entourage 10 is not a classic application.

Look in the Office X folder. There should be a folder named "Additional
Tools". Insides this folder is "Remove Office".

The only folders within the Office X folder are: Clipart,
Office, Read Me, Shared Applications, and Templates. I looked within
these folders as well and found nothing titled "Remove Office".

If I go to the Microsoft Office X/Office folder there is a folder
titled "Entourage First Run". Should there be a folder like this for
Excel, Powerpoint and Word? Also within the Microsoft Office X/
Office folder there is a folder titled Startup. Within this folder
there are three folders. One for Excel, one for powerpoint and one for
word. Each of these three folders are empty. Should there be some
startup info or something else in these folders?

Hi Alicia:

Hmmm... You have a partial install there.

No: There should be nothing in the Startup folders unless you put something
there. That's the place you put templates you want Word, PowerPoint or
Excel to load when they start.

OK, so the Remove Office tool is on your CD if it is not on your hard disk.
Full instructions are here:

Hi Alicia:

OK, then I wouldn't try anything else.

You are getting to the stage where you need to "Reinstall" the application.
Without the install source, you won't be able to do that.

You need either the Microsoft Office CD and licence key, or a network
location from which you can re-install.

I would stop trying things until you have one or the other, because if you
break it, it will be gone forever.

Cheers
