Failure to open a new file from the File Menu

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Whenever I try to open a document from within the application from the File dropdown menu, WORD stops responding and after a time, will resume but with a much too large white dialog box with no buttons. The only option at this point is to force-quit the application (this also happened with Word 2004). I think it must be a library settings issue? How would I resolve this?

The first step is to run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions & shut down
the Mac for a few minutes. If the problem continues when you restart reply
with complete version specifics for your installation of both OS X & Office
as well as any other details you can supply... There are no "library
settings" but how to proceed if necessary depends on the requested info.
