failure to recognize cursor, move text, in word 2003

I am experiencing anomalies in Word 2003 documents: occasionally, I cannot
place the cursor anywhere (although I can see the arrow moving), or move
text. Pressing ENTER sometimes brings up other menus. On opening up a
document the cursor is right at the top of the page, although in Print
Preview the correct margin is displayed. There is no error message, the
application does not close down and no other programs are active according to
the Task Manager. My virus and spyware scans are totally up to date and
closing down the Firewall does not help.

Thanks for the suggestion, Terry, I will look out for this. I have not found
any of my documents to be protected so far. I do find, however, that I can
open a document and all is well and then the next time I open the same
document, the cursor is at the very top of the page.

That sounds like you have Hide White Space enabled. (View, White Space.)
This has probably been enabled because you accidentally clicked the area
between pages when scrolling down/up the document. This has been resolved in
2007 where you now need to double-click the gap between pages.
